For many years I have had a "Moses-style" walking stick that I sometimes take with me when I go walking ... no lies! Who would have thought? I mean, what else would I do with it?
A few days ago I thought the walking stick could be enhanced by the addition of a wrapped paracord grip. As is customary, I first researched a few methods on YouTube and then started to weave. The long blue/ black/ white section in the middle may look like it is just wound around the stick, but as you see from the photos, each row is interwoven with 5 links into the previous and subsequent rows. This style is called the "Fish Scale". The style of the two silver-blue and orange/ black/ white collars at each end are called the "Headhunker's Knot".
The grip is very comfortable to hold and I think good to look at as well. Now I need to go for a walk to try it out.

Looks good, Bro. How did you decide how much cord to start with for the blue-ish para - the Fish Scale weave? Like the Cobra Weave, did you know it would be like 3:1 and measured what you wanted? Or, did you weave it, notice it was short and add the Headhunters for extra length? Looks to be a good fit either way. Are you worried about slippage up or down your stick? Are the weaves tight enough to hold or did you utilize a little super glue for stickage?
ReplyDeleteI suppose I should have mentioned the lengths and calculations in the post ... my oops!
ReplyDeleteI did not know how much cord I would need to begin with - none of the YouTube videos gave an indication, plus it would vary depending on the diameter of the stick. I took a spare piece of paracord to do a test run. I wove until it was about 25mm (1") in length down the stick and then untied it and measured how much cord had been used. It was about 1m (36"). Multiplied it out, knowing I wanted a running length of about 200mm (8") on the stick, so started with about 8m (24-25 feet) of cord.
Similarly, I did a test for the Headhunters knots and found they required about 1m each. I knew right from the start that I would add these extra collars at each end for cosmetic effect and they add about 35mm (3") of extra length to the overall length of the wrap.
Slippage will not be a problem - the weave is tight, so friction alone will hold it all in place.
Beautifully done! X
